Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat Talanoa Session on Pacific Human Rights : West Papua (Papua)
In recent years, the conflict in West Papua (Papua) has worsened significantly, renewed by acts of violence and retaliation in December 2018 and mass demonstrations and clashes between both sides. Domestic and international human rights actors have been very critical of Indonesian authorities with reports of excessive force and alleged human rights abuses by military, police and civil militia. This has led to an increase in alleged unlawful arrests, displacement, injury and death of innocent civilians and West Papuans (Papuans). The severity of the situation in West Papua (Papua) remains a significant public interest topic that requires our attention.
